কুমিল্লা-৭ (চান্দিনা) আসনের উপনির্বাচনে ক্ষমতাসীন আওয়ামী লীগের প্রার্থী ডা. প্রাণ গোপাল দত্তকে বিজয়ী ঘোষণা করে গণবিজ্ঞপ্তি জারি করা হয়েছে।
সোমবার সকালে রিটার্নিং কর্মকর্তা ও কুমিল্লার আঞ্চলিক নির্বাচন কর্মকর্তা মো. দুলাল তালুকদার এই বিজ্ঞপ্তি জারি করেন।
দুলাল তালুকদার বলেন, ১৯ সেপ্টেম্বর মনোনয়নপত্র প্রত্যাহারের শেষ দিন ছিল। এতে জাতীয় পার্টি ও ন্যাপের প্রার্থী মনোনয়নপত্র প্রত্যাহার করে নেন। ফলে প্রার্থী হিসেবে আওয়ামী লীগের প্রাণ গোপাল দত্তই ছিলেন।
‘এ অবস্থায় একক প্রার্থী হিসেবে তার নাম চূড়ান্ত করা হয়। যেহেতু একজন প্রার্থী, তাই আর মার্কা দেওয়ার কোনো বিধান নেই। এ অবস্থায় প্রাণ গোপাল দত্তকে বিনা প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতায় বিজয়ী ঘোষণা করে গণবিজ্ঞপ্তি জারি করা হয়েছে।’
এরপর গেজেট প্রকাশ করার জন্য নির্বাচন কমিশন সচিবালয়ে পাঠানো হবে বলে জানান এই রিটার্নিং কর্মকর্তা।
ওই আসন থেকে পাঁচবার নির্বাচিত সংসদ-সদস্য সাবেক ডেপুটি স্পিকার অধ্যাপক মো. আলী আশরাফের মৃত্যুতে ৩০ জুলাই আসনটি শূন্য হয়। ৭ অক্টোবর ভোট গ্রহণের দিন ধার্য করে ২ সেপ্টেম্বর নির্বাচনি তফসিল ঘোষণা করেছিল নির্বাচন কমিশন।
