সুজলা-সুফলা শস্য-শ্যামলা আমাদের এই প্রিয় মাতৃভূমি বাংলাদেশ। ইতিহাসের ভেলায় চড়ে কালকে জয় করে হাজার বছরের ইতিহাস, ঐতিহ্য, শিল্প, সাহিত্য, সংস্কৃতিকে একেবারে বুকের মাঝে ধারণ করে শির উঁচু করে ঠাঁই দাঁড়িয়ে আছে অনেক রক্তের দামে কেনা ভালোবাসার জন্মভূমি বাংলাদেশ। আমাদের এই অতি চেনা অতি জানা চির সবুজের রঙে রাঙানো সোনার দেশের ঐতিহ্যবাহী যশোর জেলার কেশবপুর উপজেলার ‘কপোতাক্ষ নদে’র তীরে অবস্থিত সাগরদাঁড়ি গ্রামে ১৮২৪ খ্রিষ্টাব্দের ২৫ জানুয়ারি সোনার চামচ মুখে নিয়ে এই ধরাধামে জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন বাংলা সাহিত্যের মহাপুরুষ, বাংলা কাব্য প্রথম আধুনিক কবি, বাঙালির চেতনার প্রাণের কবি, অতীব প্রতিভাবান অমর কবি, অমিত্রাক্ষর ছন্দের বাংলা ভাষার প্রবর্তক এবং আধুনিক বাংলা কাব্যের মহান রূপকার মহাকবি মাইকেল মধুসূদন দত্ত। বাঙালি কবি মধুসূদনের হাত ধরেই আজকের বাংলা কাব্যের আধুনিকতার ছোঁয়া পেয়েছে। বাংলা কাব্যে আধুনিকতা, বাংলা মহাকাব্যে বিপস্নবের সুর-ছন্দ; কুসংস্কার ধর্মান্ধতার প্রতিবাদে বিদ্রোহের অগ্নিশিখা কবি মধুসূদনের রচনায় খুব সচেতনভাবেই উঠে এসেছে। আর তাই বাংলা কাব্যে সাহিত্যে আধুনিকতার, বিদ্রোহের প্রতিবাদের ভাষার চেতনার উন্মেষ কবি মধুসূদনের ব্যক্তিস্বাতন্ত্র্যের মধ্যেই আলোকিত করেছে।
অমিত্রাক্ষর (সনেট) ছন্দের প্রবর্তক মহাকবি মাইকেল মধুসূদন দত্তের বাবা জমিদার রাজনারায়ণ দত্ত কলকাতার একজন প্রতিষ্ঠিত উকিল ছিলেন। মা জাহ্নবী দেবী ছিলেন সাধ্বী ও গুণশালিনী নারী। জমিদার ঘরে জন্মগ্রহণ করেও শুধুমাত্র সাহিত্যকে ভালোবেসে মধুসূদন সমাজ সংসার থেকে পেয়েছেন বঞ্চনা আর যন্ত্রণা৷ মধুসূদনের বাল্যকাল অতিবাহিত হয় সাগরদাঁড়িতেই। প্রথমে তিনি সাগরদাঁড়ির পাঠশালায় পড়াশুনা করেন। পরে সাত বছর বয়সে কলকাতার খিদিরপুর স্কুলে ভর্তি হন। এরপর ১৮৩৩ সালে হিন্দু কলেজে ভর্তি হন। এই কলেজের অধ্যয়নরত অবস্থায় বাংলা, সংস্কৃত, ফারসি ভাষা শেখেন। ১৮৪৪ সালে তিনি বিশপস কলেজে ভর্তি হন। ১৮৪৭ সাল পর্যন্ত ওই কলেজে অধ্যয়ন করেন। এখানে তিনি ইংরেজি ছাড়াও গ্রিক, ল্যাটিন ও সংস্কৃত ভাষা শেখার সুযোগ পান। এসময় ধর্মান্তরের কারণে মধুসূদন তার আত্মীয় স্বজনদের নিকট থেকে বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে পড়েন। তাঁর পিতা এক সময় অর্থ পাঠানো বন্ধ করে দেন। তাই অগত্যা ১৮৪৮ সালে তিনি ভাগ্যান্বেষণে মাদ্রাজ গমন করেন।
১৮৪৮-৫২ সাল পর্যন্ত মাদ্রাজ মেইল অরফ্যান অ্যাসাইলাম স্কুলে তিনি শিক্ষকতা করেন। এরপর ১৮৫৬ সাল পর্যন্ত মাদ্রাজ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধিভুক্ত হাইস্কুলে শিক্ষকতা করেন। এসময় সাংবাদিক ও কবি হিসেবে পরিচিতি লাভ করেন। একই সঙ্গে হিব্রু, ফরাসি, জার্মান, ইটালিয়ান, তামিল ও তেলেগু ভাষা শিক্ষাগ্রহণ করেন।
মাদ্রাজে অবস্থানকালে প্রথমে রেবেকা ও পরে হেনরিয়েটা’র সঙ্গে বিবাহ বন্ধনে আবদ্ধ হন। এরপর ১৮৬২ সালে ব্যারিস্টারি পড়ার উদ্দেশ্যে বিলেত গমন করেন এবং গ্রেজ ইন এ যোগদান করেন। ১৮৬৩ সালে প্যারিস হয়ে ভার্সাই নগরীতে যান। এরপর ১৮৬৫ সালে আবার ইংল্যান্ডে ফিরে যান। ১৮৬৬ সালে গ্রেজ ইন থেকে ব্যারিস্টারি পাস করেন। ১৮৬৭ সালে দেশে ফিরে কলকাতা হাইকোর্টে আইন পেশায় যোগদান করেন। ১৮৭০ সালে হাইকোর্টে অনুবাদ বিভাগে যোগদান করেন। এখানে কিছুদিন কাজ করার পর পুনরায় আইন পেশায় যোগদান করেন।

কবি মাইকেল মধুসূদন দত্ত ছিলেন বহু ভাষাবিদ, উচ্চাঙ্গের একজন কবি-সাহিত্যিক-প্রাবন্ধিক । আমরা তাঁকে কোন দিক হতে বিচার করবো । কোন দিকে তিনি ছিলেন না। সব দিকেই তাঁর বিচরণ । দরিদ্র পরিবারের সন্তান না হয়েও স্বধর্ম ত্যাগ করায় তিনি দারুণ অর্থ কষ্টে নিপতিত হন। এর মধ্যেও নিজের প্রতিভা বিকাশে ছিলেন অবিচল-অটল। ধর্মের কারনে কোনো কোনো পন্ডিত তাঁকে নিয়ে লিখতে গিয়ে অনেকটা হেয় করে দেখেছেন। এটা তাদের উদারতার অভাব। আসলে ধর্ম ত্যাগ করে তিনি ভুল করেছিলেন, নাকি ঠিক করেছিলেন সে বিচার করার ক্ষমতা আমাদের হাতে নেই। সেই বিচারের ন্যায়ভার সৃষ্টিকর্তার হাতে। যারা ধর্মের জন্য মধুসূদনকে ছোট করেছেন আমার বিশ্বাস তাদের ধর্ম বিশ্বাস যাই হোক না কেন; তারা গোঁড়া। গোঁড়ামী আর ঈর্ষা দিয়ে কোন প্রভিবানের প্রতিভার বিচার ও মূল্যায়ন করা যায়না৷ বরং ওই সব পন্ডিতজনের লেখা যারা পাঠ করেন , তারা শুধু বিভ্রান্তই হন না, নিজেদের মধ্যে গোঁড়ামীকেই লালন করেন।
কবিগুরু রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরকেও অনেকে কটাক্ষ করেছেন। তবে তারা রবীন্দ্রনাথ হতে পারেননি। কবি মাইকেলকে যারা কটাক্ষ করেছেন, তারা পন্ডিত হতে পারেন, কিন্তু কবি মাইকেল হতে পারেননি। কবি মাইকেল মধুসূদন দত্ত একজনই হয়েছেন।
সাহিত্যে অমর সৃষ্টির মধ্য দিয়ে মহাকবির স্বীকৃতি পেয়েছেন তিনি। মধুকবি তাঁর বিরল প্রতিভার স্বাক্ষর রেখেছেন বাংলা সাহিত্যে প্রায় প্রতিটি ক্ষেত্রে। অসাধারণ প্রতিভাধর এই কবি তাঁর সৃষ্টিশীলতায় বাংলা সাহিত্যের ভাণ্ডারকে করেছেন সমৃদ্ধ থেকে সমৃদ্ধতর। মাইকেলের ব্যক্তিগত জীবন ছিল নাটকীয় এবং বেদনাময়। ১৮৭৩ সালের ২৯ জুন মাত্র ৪৯ বছর বয়সে কলকাতায় দৈন্যতায় করুণ অবস্থায় মারা যান মহাকবি মাইকেল মধুসূদন। মৃত্যুর পর তাঁর ভাইয়ের মেয়ে কবি মানকুমারি বসু ১৮৯০ সালে সাগরদাঁড়িতে মহাকবির প্রথম স্মরণসভার আয়োজন করেন। সেই থেকে শুরু হয় মধু মেলার। মধুকবিকে কলকাতার সার্কুলার রোডে সমাধি দেওয়া হয়। মহাকবি জীবনের অন্তিম পর্যায়ে জন্মভূমির প্রতি তার সুগভীর ভালোবাসার চিহ্ন রেখে গেছেন এপিটাপে লিখা অবিস্মরণীয় পংক্তিমালায়-
