বাংলাদেশের সঙ্গে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সম্পর্ক দারুণ ‘শক্তিশালী’ মন্তব্য করে মার্কিন পররাষ্ট্র দপ্তরের মুখপাত্র নেড প্রাইস বলেছেন, ‘নিজেদের মত সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়ার অধিকার বাংলাদেশের আছে। বাংলাদেশের সার্বভৌমত্ব এবং তাদের পররাষ্ট্রনীতির সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণের অধিকারের প্রতি আমরা শ্রদ্ধাশীল।’
চার জাতির জোট কোয়াডে বাংলাদেশের অংশগ্রহণের সম্ভাবনা প্রসঙ্গে চীনা রাষ্ট্রদূতের দেওয়া এক বক্তব্যের প্রেক্ষিতে এসব মন্তব্য করেন নেড প্রাইস।
গত মঙ্গলবার এক ব্রিফিংয়ে মার্কিন পররাষ্ট্র দপ্তরের মুখপাত্র বলেন, বাংলাদেশে চীনা রাষ্ট্রদূতের ওই বক্তব্যের বিষয়টি আমাদের নজরে এসেছে। আমরা আগেও স্পষ্ট করেছি যে, কোয়াড হচ্ছে অনানুষ্ঠানিক, প্রয়োজনীয় এবং বহুপক্ষীয় একটি ব্যবস্থা। এর উদ্দেশ্য হলো অবাধ ও মুক্ত ইন্দো-প্যাসেফিক অঞ্চলের লক্ষ্যকে এগিয়ে নেওয়া। কোয়াডে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র, ভারত, অস্ট্রেলিয়া ও জাপানের মতো গণতান্ত্রিক দেশগুলো রয়েছে।
কোয়াডে বাংলাদেশের যুক্ত হওয়া বা না হওয়ার প্রসঙ্গে নেড প্রাইস বলেন, বাংলাদেশের সঙ্গে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের শক্তিশালী সম্পর্ক রয়েছে। যেটুকু বলতে পারি, বাংলাদেশের সার্বভৌমত্ব এবং নিজেদের মত করে পররাষ্ট্রনীতির সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণের অধিকারের প্রতি আমরা শ্রদ্ধাশীল।
উল্লেখ্য,গত সোমবার এক অনুষ্ঠানে বাংলাদেশকে কোয়াডে যোগ না দেওয়ার পরামর্শ দেন ঢাকায় নিযুক্ত চীনের রাষ্ট্রদূত লি জিমিং। কোয়াডকে ‘চীনবিরোধী’ জোটে আখ্যা দিয়ে লি জিমিং বলেন, এতে বাংলাদেশের অংশগ্রহণের সিদ্ধান্ত দুই দেশের মধ্যে সম্পর্কের ‘ক্ষতি’ করবে।
চীনের রাষ্ট্রদূত লি জিমিংয়ের এমন বক্তব্যের জবাবে পরদিন ঢাকায় এক অনুষ্ঠানে বাংলাদেশের পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী এ কে আব্দুল মোমেন বলেন, এটা নিয়ে আমাদের বিশেষ কিছু বক্তব্য নেই। তবে কি করব আমার তার সিদ্ধান্ত আমরাই নেব।
