এক রাতে ১৪০০’র বেশি ডলফিন হত্যা করা হয়েছে নরওয়েজীয় সাগর ও আটলান্টিক মহাসাগরের মাঝে অবস্থিত ফ্যারো দ্বীপপুঞ্জে। স্থানীয় কর্তৃপক্ষ বলছে, তাদের ঐতিহ্যের ধারায় বিরাট এই শিকারের আয়োজন করা হয়। তবে এটা মূলত তিমি শিকারের আয়োজন করা হয়।
পরিবেশ নিয়ে কাজ করা সংস্থা সি শেফার্ড এটাকে বর্বর বলে আখ্যা দিয়েছে। ডেনমার্কের অধীনে থাকা স্বশাসিত ফ্যারো দ্বীপপুঞ্জে এটাই একদিনে সবচেয়ে বড় শিকারের ঘটনা ।
মূলত কয়েক শতাব্দী ধরে এই অঞ্চলে তিমি শিকারের একটা আয়োজন করা হয়। প্রাণিদের অধিকার নিয়ে কাজ করা বিভিন্ন সংস্থা এর বিরুদ্ধে সরব থাকলেও স্থানীয়রা সবসময়ই তাদের কাজের পক্ষে সাফাই গেয়েছেন।
একসময় ফ্যারো দ্বীপপুঞ্জে বাস করতেন ৪১ বছর বয়সী ক্রিস্টিয়ান পিটারসেন বলছেন, সাত বছর বয়স থেকে তিনি এই তিমি শিকার উৎসবে অংশ নিচ্ছেন। কিন্তু তাদের গ্রামে কখনও ডলফিন শিকার করা হয়নি। যেটা করা হয় সেটা যদি খাদ্যের জন্য করা হয়, তবে আমি এর পক্ষে। কিন্তু এ সপ্তাহে যা হলো, যেভাবে হলো আমি এর পক্ষে না।
এছাড়া ডলফিনগুলো ধরার পর সৈকতে তাদের হত্যার আগে রেখে দেওয়াও হয়েছে লম্বা সময়, কারণ এত ডলফিন মারার মতো পর্যাপ্ত লোক সেখানে ছিল না। এতে ডলফিনগুলোকে আরও বেশি কষ্ট পেতে হয়েছে। এ বিষয়টিরও সমালোচনা করেছেন তিনি।
পিটারসনসহ আরও অনেকে রোববারের এই ঘটনার বৈধতা নিয়ে প্রশ্ন তুলেছেন। স্থানীয় একজন পুলিশ কর্মকর্তা এটিকে বৈধ বলে দাবি করলেও তা নিয়ে বাড়তি আর কোনো কথা বলতে রাজি হননি।
