দুর্নীতির দুই মামলায় কারাদণ্ডপ্রাপ্ত বিএনপি চেয়ারপারসন খালেদা জিয়ার দণ্ড স্থগিতের মেয়াদ আরও ছয় মাস বাড়ানো হয়েছে।
আজ রবিবার (১৯ সেপ্টেম্বর) সচিবালয় থেকে বেরিয়ে যাওয়ার সময় সাংবাদিকদের প্রশ্নের জবাবে স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী আসাদুজ্জামান খান কামাল বলেন, আগের শর্তে বেগম খালেদা জিয়ার মুক্তির মেয়াদ ৬ মাস বাড়ানো হয়েছে।
এ বিষয়ে গত বৃহস্পতিবার (১৬ সেপ্টেম্বর) স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী বলেন, ‘সেপ্টেম্বরের ২৪ তারিখ দণ্ড স্থগিতের সময় শেষ হবে। খালেদা জিয়ার ছোট ভাই আমাদের কাছে একটি আবেদন নিয়ে এসেছিলেন। আমরা যথাযথ প্রক্রিয়ার জন্য আইন মন্ত্রণালয়ে পাঠিয়েছিলাম। আইন মন্ত্রণালয় যে অভিমত দিয়েছে, সে অনুযায়ী প্রক্রিয়া চলছে।’
এর আগে রবিবার (১২ সেপ্টেম্বর) আইনমন্ত্রী আনিসুল হক জানান, খালেদা জিয়ার দণ্ড স্থগিতের বিষয়ে আবেদন আমাদের কাছে এসেছিল। আমরা তার দণ্ড আরও ছয় মাস স্থগিতের বিষয়ে মতামত দিয়ে প্রস্তাবটি স্বরাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়ে পাঠিয়েছি। সে মতামতে আগের মতোই তিনি (খালেদা জিয়া) বিদেশে যেতে পারবেন না এবং বাড়িতে থেকে চিকিৎসা নিতে হবে বলে দুটি শর্তও দেওয়া হয়েছে।
এর আগে জিয়া অরফানেজ ট্রাস্ট দুর্নীতি মামলায় ২০১৮ সালের ৮ ফেব্রুয়ারি খালেদা জিয়াকে পাঁচ বছরের কারাদণ্ড দেন ঢাকার ৫ নম্বর বিশেষ আদালত। রায় ঘোষণার পর খালেদা জিয়াকে পুরান ঢাকার নাজিমউদ্দিন রোডে অবস্থিত পুরনো কেন্দ্রীয় কারাগারে বন্দি রাখা হয়। এরপর এ মামলার আপিলে তার সাজা পাঁচ বছর থেকে বাড়িয়ে ১০ বছর করেন হাইকোর্ট।
এছাড়াও ২০১৮ সালের ২৯ অক্টোবর জিয়া চ্যারিটেবল ট্রাস্ট দুর্নীতির মামলায় খালেদা জিয়াকে সাত বছরের সশ্রম কারাদণ্ডের আদেশ দেন ঢাকার ৫ নম্বর বিশেষ আদালত। রায়ে সাত বছরের কারাদণ্ড ছাড়াও খালেদা জিয়াকে ১০ লাখ টাকা জরিমানা করা হয়। জরিমানা অনাদায়ে আরও ছয় মাসের কারাদণ্ডের আদেশ দেন আদালত।
এরপর কারান্তরীণ অবস্থায়ই ২০১৮ সালের ৬ অক্টোবর ও ২০১৯ সালের ১ এপ্রিল চিকিৎসার জন্য বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব মেডিক্যাল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় (বিএসএমএমইউ) হাসপাতালে নেওয়া হয় খালেদা জিয়াকে। প্রয়োজনীয় পরীক্ষা শেষে তাকে আবারও কারাগারে পাঠানো হয়। এভাবে কয়েক দফায় তাকে চিকিৎসার জন্য হাসপাতালে এবং হাসপাতাল থেকে কারাগারে নেওয়া হয়। তবে এরই মাঝে দেশে করোনা পরিস্থিতি ভয়াবহ আকার ধারণ করলে খালেদা জিয়ার মুক্তি চেয়ে তার পরিবার সরকারের কাছে আবেদন জানায়। পরে দণ্ড স্থগিত করে মুক্তি দিয়ে তার মেয়াদ বাড়ায় সরকার।
