যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে হারিকেন আইডাতে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত ও বন্যাকবলিত এলাকা পরিদর্শন করেছেন প্রেসিডেন্ট জো বাইডেন। তিনি জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের প্রভাবকে অস্তিত্ববিনাশী হুমকি হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করেন। মঙ্গলবার (৭ সেপ্টেম্বর) এক প্রতিবেদনে এসব জানিয়েছে বার্তাসংস্থা রয়টার্স।
বাইডেন বলেছে, জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন আমাদের জীবন ও অর্থনীতির অস্তিত্বের জন্য একটি হুমকি। এটা এখন ঘরের দোরগোড়ায় এসে দাঁড়িয়েছে। অবস্থা কোনোভাবেই ভালোর দিকে যাচ্ছে না। এটা আরো খারাপ হওয়ার আগেই আমরা তা বন্ধ করতে পারি।
ঝড়ে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত এলাকায় সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে এটা বাইডেনের দ্বিতীয় সময়। ২০২০ সালে তার নির্বাচনী প্রচারণার অন্যতম বিষয় ছিল জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের বিরুদ্ধে লড়াই করা। এই কাজকে নিজের প্রশাসনে সর্বোচ্চ অগ্রাধিকার দেওয়ার কথাও বলেছিলেন তিনি।
মঙ্গলবার বাইডেন উল্লেখ করেন, দাবানল, হারিকেন এবং বন্যা মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের প্রতিটি অংশে আঘাত হানছে। তিনি বলেন, আমরা বিজ্ঞানী এবং অর্থনীতিবিদ এবং জাতীয় নিরাপত্তা বিশেষজ্ঞদের কথা শুনছি। তারা সবাই আমাদের সতর্কবার্তা দিয়েছেন। আমেরিকান জাতি ও পুরো বিশ্ব বিপদে পড়েছে।
