সিরাজগঞ্জে যমুনা নদীর পানি বৃদ্ধি অব্যাহত রয়েছে। একইসাথে জেলার মধ্যে দিয়ে বয়ে যাওয়া অভ্যন্তরীণ সকল নদ-নদীর পানিও বাড়ছে। রোববার (২২ আগস্ট) গত ২৪ ঘণ্টায় সিরাজগঞ্জ শহর রক্ষা বাঁধ পয়েন্টে যমুনা নদীর পানি ১২ সেন্টিমিটার বৃদ্ধি পেয়ে বিপদসীমার মাত্র ৬ সেন্টিমিটার ও কাজীপুর মেঘাই ঘাট পয়েন্টে ১৩ সেন্টিমিটার বৃদ্ধি পেয়ে বিপদসীমার মাত্র ৪ সেন্টিমিটার নিচ দিয়ে প্রবাহিত হচ্ছে।
টানা কয়েক দিন যমুনা নদীতে পানি বৃদ্ধি অব্যাহত থাকায় প্রতিদিনই বন্যা কবলিত হয়ে পড়ছে নতুন নতুন এলাকা। এতে পানিবন্দি হয়ে পড়ছেন হাজার হাজার মানুষ। এছাড়াও পানিতে গো-চারণ ভূমি তলিয়ে যাওয়ায় বিপাকে পড়েছেন জেলার গো-খামারিরা। এদিকে পানি বৃদ্ধির ফলে যমুনা নদীর ভাঙনে জেলার কাজীপুর ও চৌহালীতে প্রায় ৫০টি বসত ভিটা ও বিস্তীর্ণ ফসলি জমি নদীগর্ভে বিলীন হয়েছে।
